Job Seekers | Entrepreneurship

LEF has been helping people launch their own businesses for more than 20 years. We have incubated business and offered support for new entrepreneurs. In 2009, we launched a new entrepreneurship program focused on the needs of newcomers. We are the only small business program in the Greater Toronto Area to focus on developing the skills and dreams of newcomers to Canada.

There are two key aims of the entrepreneurship-training program:

  • To give people the skills and understanding of business and envelop them in the support of networks to enable them to maintain their momentum.
  • To make available a variety of training and development programs that make sense to our community.
  • We are the only small business program in the Greater Toronto Area to focus on developing the skills and dreams of newcomers to Canada. Programs include our Start Smart sessions, which provide an understanding about what it takes to start a business. In its first year, our 13-week small business training program has supported over 40 new business start-ups. About 16 of those are run by newcomers to Canada. Participants in our programs learn about selling, marketing, financing, business planning, banking and more. Participants also develop a business plan, receive coaching, mentorship and peer-to-peer learning.

To support our entrepreneurs and local small business owners we offer networking events with topical speakers and valuable opportunities for networking. Through these events we want to build community and capacity among local entrepreneurs, particularly newcomers.

Our guest speakers have included Toronto Argonaut Willie Pile, inspirational speakers Jennifer Hough, business development specialist Curt Skene and authors Sonia Ricotti, Ross Reck and Murray Smith. Topics have covered sales, success, motivation, human resources, team building, marketing and the law of attraction.
