As child care expanded at LEF we quickly realized the opportunity we had to prepare our own food. This allowed us to monitor and structure the food which was going to the children, as well as reduce costs by doing this work internally. From this early start our kitchen has expanded from the provision of food to child care, to that which serves a daily fee-for-service meal to staff and clients, supports our Cook’s Training program and prepares meals for local shelters.
We now provide approximately 600 meals daily to feed the children in our 17 child care centres. Also, through a partnership between LEF and Second Harvest our kitchen staff and Cook’s Training students prepare 500 meals every day for local homeless shelters.
